British Comedy
and Mysteries

Wodehouse Playhouse Keeping Up Appearances Fawlty Towers Red Green

Father Brown Mysteries Set One

Father Brown on the prowl of murder most foul. Kenneth More as G.K. Chesterton's inimitable sleuth in seven mysteries on two DVDs from the ATV/ Granada show as seen on PBS. Includes: The Hammer of God, The Oracle of the Dog, The Curse of the Golden Cross, The Eye of Apollo, The Three Tools of Death, The Mirror of the Magistrate, The Dagger with Wings.

Wodehouse Playhouse Complete Set-- DVD

At last on DVD, the hysterical 1975  and 1976 BBC shows, featuring appearances by Plum himself. Having never read any Wodehouse, I watched one of these shows when the series ran as a summer replacement, and it was the funniest thing I have ever seen. I was instantly hooked, and have since read and watched all the PGW I can get my hands on. Here are all three volumes on six  DVDs, never before available in the US, which span the Wodehouse comic repertoire from Mr. Mulliner to the Drones Club to the golf stories--for all fans of the Master.

Volume One includes: The Truth About George, Romance at Droitgate Spa, Portrait of a Disciplinarian, Unpleasantness at Budleigh Court, The Rise of Minna Nordstrom, Rodney Fails to Qualify, and A Voice From the Past.

Volume Two includes: Anselm Gets His Chance, Mr. Potter Takes a Rest Cure, Strychnine in the Soup, Feet of Clay, The Nodder, and The Code of the Mulliners.

Volume Three includes: The Smile That Wins, Big Buisness, Mulliner's Buck-U-Uppo, Tangled Hearts, Trouble Down at Tudsleigh, The Luck of the Stiffhams, and The Editor Regrets.

Jeeves and Wooster Mega Set-- DVD

Your patience is rewarded. If for some reason you failed to run out and buy all the Jeeves and Wooster videos, now you can get all four seasons on 8 DVDs in a boxed set. Three different directors did these shows at various times, and only the last season seems to diverge from PGW's comic style, slipping into a kind of slapstick that seems remote from the understated whimsey of the books. The other shows are all corkers, and even the fourth season above most viewing. Avid readers of P.G. Wodehouse consistently give high marks to the Jeeves books, and these are by far the best realisations of Bertie Wooster and the inimitable Jeeves.

Keeping Up Appearances: Hyacinth in Full Bloom-- DVD

Patricia Routledge demonstrates the painfully funny art of ettiquette as unsinkable social climber Hyacinth Bucket ("pronounced Bouquet, dear"). Volumes one through four on four discs. A veritable cornucopia of refined comedy with 20 episodes and numerous extras.

Keeping Up Appearances: Hyacinth Springs Eternal-- DVD

Fawlty Towers-- DVD

Monty Python's John Cleese as Basil Fawlty in the hysterical Britcom. The complete collection of all twelve shows on three discs.

Red Green Stuffed and Mounted Six Pack-- DVD

OK, it's not British, it's Canadian, eh? Get the duct tape and say the men's prayer, Harold, I'm going down to the lodge. 48 episodes on 6 discs.

Brideshead Revisited-- DVD

The acclaimed miniseries of Evelyn Waugh's compelling novel, with Jeremy Irons as Captain Charles Ryder. Over ten hours on three discs.

Lord Peter Wimsey: Complete Collection-- DVD

Ten discs featuring five complete adventures of Dorothy L. Sayers' urbane sleuth. The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, The Nine Tailors, Murder Must Advertise, Five Red Herrings, and Clouds of Witness.
